I grew up constantly hearing my mother say, “Eileen you climbed out of your crib before you were nine months old, you never walked you ran and you still haven’t learned to slow down!”
What slowed me down at 59 was accumulations of physical injuries that also led me to begin the practice of yoga.
At this morning’s Yin class, led by Jenny who gracefully glides across the floor reminded us to be compassionate and loving to ourselves and opening to the grace that is always available to us in the midst of our pain and suffering.
Grace is understood as elegance in form, manner, motion, action as well as mercy and clemency.
In Christian theology grace is defined not as a created substance of any kind, but as the love and mercy given to us by The Divine Creator as a spontaneous gift IF we are open to receive it.
When I began the practice of yoga last October, my teachers spoke about “finding your edge” in the asana/poses;
But not until last week’s evening Yin practice with Terri did I really hear-meaning comprehend- that in Yin you find your edge then BACK OFF it!
The edge in yoga asanas/poses is reached when one is feeling intense sensations and is being challenged to the max.
When one goes past that point injuries will occur.
Because my nature has always been to push myself to my max-and often beyond;
I injured myself on six different occasions ‘practicing’ yoga because I had NOT yet learned that in the practice of yoga you do NO HARM!
However, to advance in the physical part of yoga it is essential to explore and find ones edge in each posture; but NOT to go over the edge!
When one focuses on their breath they will comprehend best where their edge is; and in yoga as in life everything is connected to the breath!
I have now learned that slow, even and graceful breathing will keep me safe in the postures I can access- and being on my knees is NOT accessible for me because I unknowingly destroyed my cartilage;
I also have learned that my former tendency in 'practicing' yoga of inhaling deeply and exhaling with force was pushing me to my edge and sending me beyond it!
Which brings me back to politics as usual:
Israel's 'Operation Protective EDGE'
And ALL is GRACE
